L is one of the 27 letter codes Avery makes for name based lateral filing, A to Z plus Mc.

Applied to the side tab of a lateral file, the letter reads from the drawer face with the file still in place. In a name based system every file starting with L carries the same mustard tab, so a whole surname run can be scanned, pulled or refiled without opening a folder, and a misfile shows as a break in the colour block.

Mustard is the colour Avery assigns to the letter L. The palette runs twelve colours from A to L and repeats from M to X, so L shares its mustard with X and the printed letter is what keeps the pair apart on the shelf. The colour still does its work, because a misfiled folder breaks the colour pattern of its run before anyone opens it.

The facestock is polyester with a permanent adhesive, which stands up to the handling a working file takes and then an archive. The same letter is also available as a pack of 180 under Avery code 43312, a larger 25 x 42mm side tab pack of 240 under 44512 and a top tab pack of 150 under 44412.
